HALKIDIKI MENDI The sanctuary

The sanctuary of the ancient town was found to the sandy, flat cape Posidi, 4km west of Mendi. The buildings, which have been excavated, include:

  • the temple of Poseidon, of the 5th century, the identification of which is due to some graved inscriptions on the vessels
  • An arched building of the second quarter of the 6th century, at a restoration phase by the end of the 3d century b.c.
  • an auxiliary square building by the end of the 6th century b.c.
  • a first geometrical arched building at the end of the 10th century b.c. In the interior and south of the building there was an altar which was in use by the end of the 12th century – beginning of the 11th to the 5th century b.c.
